Monthly Trivia: If you begin pregnancy at a normal weight, how much weight should you gain?

A. 10-15 pounds
B. 25-35 pounds
C. 35-40 pounds
D. None of the above

Answer: B. You should gain 25 to 35 pounds over the nine months. Did you know that most women need around 300 extra calories per day during pregnancy? One healthy snack like four fig bars and a glass of skim milk will provide these extra calories. However, the exact amount of extra calories you need depends on your weight before pregnancy. To avoid gaining more than the needed weight during pregnancy, be sure to watch your portions and eat foods that include grains, vegetables, fruits, milk products and proteins, all of which are a vital part of having a healthy pregnancy.
