Organ Donation and Bone Marrow Registry
One person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer approximately every four minutes and will cause the deaths of an estimated 54,020 people in 2010. And, more than 110,000 men, women and children currently need a life-saving organ transplant and each day more than 18 people die waiting for one. Community Health Charities partners with member charities Leukemia & Lymphona Society (LLS) and National Kidney Foundation (NKF) during National Donate Life month to raise awareness on the importance of becoming a donor.
Representing LLS, Donna Eichna an In-Patient Stem Cell Transplant Coordinator for Inova Fairfax Hospital and long-time NKF volunteer and former board member, Bill Singleton talk about the need for organ and bone marrow donors. As a living kidney donor and his work as a volunteer, Singleton brings a unique message to donors and recipients who await a life saving organ transplant. Eichna shares her hands on experience of working with patients and her knowledge of bone marrow transplantation and how easy it is to become a donor.
